Faith is a foundational element of our spiritual lives, and understanding it can transform how we live and relate to God.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.  Hebrews 11:1

The book of Hebrews is a rich letter written to early Christians who were facing persecution and were tempted to revert to Judaism. The author aims to encourage them by highlighting the supremacy of Christ and the importance of faith, particularly through examples of the faithful from the past.

Hebrews 11:1 offers a profound definition of faith. Hope relates to the promises of God, things unseen and yet cherished and anticipated by believers. The spiritual realities and promises of God that are not visible to the human eye but are trusted based on God’s faithfulness.

Faith is not merely wishful thinking. It is a confident trust based on the character of God and His promises. It requires an assurance in things that cannot be physically perceived. This trust and assurance transform our perspective, enabling us to live lives that reflect the certainty of God’s promises, much like the heroes of faith mentioned later in Hebrews 11

In our daily lives, this passage challenges us to evaluate where we place our confidence. Are we trusting in the seen and temporal, or is our faith grounded in the promises of God? We are encouraged to cultivate a faith that remains steadfast despite circumstances, much like Abraham who journeyed without knowing his destination, or Moses who led his people with confidence in a God he couldn’t see.

As we reflect on Hebrews 11:1, may we grow in our understanding and practice of faith. Let us embrace a confident hope and assurance in God’s promises and presence, trusting Him fully even when we do not see the full picture.
